Objective:

A four week course offering additional instruction in musculoskeletal disorders.

Description/Means of Implementation:

The student will be an integral part of the orthopedic team and will be assigned to the orthopedic clinics at the Medical Center of Louisiana (University Hospital), Children’s Hospital, and the private community hospital clinics at Kenner. The student will participate in care of in-patients and will assist in the ER and plaster room.

The course will expose the student to the indications, evaluation, and methods of treatment of orthopedic problems, including management of trauma and chronic musculoskeletal disease. The full-time schedule includes active patient care participation, on-call experience, and participation in orthopedic conferences.

At the end of the elective, the student should have a broad base of orthopedic knowledge. The student should be able to evaluate, order appropriate studies, diagnose the condition and have an understanding of the principles of treatment. The student will spend two weeks at the University Campus, one week at Children’s Hospital and one week in the private community hospital. Changes can sometimes be made to accommodate requests by the students.

Method of Evaluation:

Participation, presentations, and personal evaluations by faculty & residents. No examination will be given. Grade will be given as honors/pass/fail.

Requirements:

Third year elective in Orthopedics at LSU or consent of director.
