Course name and number: Child/Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry (New Orleans Adolescent Hospital) PSYCH 427p.

Objectives:

  1. Familiarize the student with inpatient adolescent and child patient population.
  2. Introduction to the role of the psychiatrist in the milieu of a short term unit. 
  3. Development of skills in interviewing and evaluation and introduction to group therapy of adolescents and children and their families.
  4. Familiarize the student with psychotropic medications, group and family therapies, individual therapy and play therapy.

Means of Implementation:

  1. The student will evaluate and follow-up patients under supervision.
  2. The focus will be on the process of interviewing, the evaluation of mental status, formulation, and selection of appropriate treatment modalities.
  3. The student will observe and participate in group therapy and family therapy sessions. Discussions with the supervisor will focus on group and family process and the role of the therapist.
  4. The student will be assigned to patients to follow under supervision.

Method of Evaluation:

The assessment will depend on the range of skills demonstrated by the student in interviewing, the organization of data, and the formulation of treatment plans.

Course name and number: General Psychiatry Elective (Ochsner Medical Institutions) Psych 428b.

Number of students: Two (2)

Objectives:

Our objective is to provide the senior medical student with a broad-based exposure to hospital psychiatry. Ochsner has three separate, specialized psychiatry units which provide clinical experience with acute psychiatric emergencies, addictive behavior, and cognitive behavioral treatment of psychophysiologic disorders.

Course Outline:

One week each may be spent on the Acute Adult Psychiatry Unit, the Addictive Behavior Unit, and the Behavioral Medicine Unit. The student participates in the treatment of the individual patients on each of these units and attends group therapy sessions and staff meetings.

The fourth week is spent on the Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service of Ochsner Foundation Hospital. The student shares daytime on-call duties for the emergency room with psychiatry residents and staff.

Weekly seminars for the student plus weekly developmental case conferences provide didactic experiences

Course name and number: Addiction Psychiatry Elective (Ochsner Medical Institutions) PSYCH 429b.

Objective:

Our objective is to provide the senior medical student with exposure to addiction psychiatry.

Course outline:

This elective is a four week experience on the Addictive Behavior Unit where medical students actively participate in the evaluation of patients with addictive disorders. Students assist with treatment responsibilities and consults.

Evaluation:

Rating by Medical Director of Addictive Behavior Unit.

Course name and number: Acting Internship in Psychiatry (LSU-MCLNO) PSYCH 433a.

Duration: 4 weeks, full-time

Objectives:

  1. To introduce the student to the range of psychopathology present in a short-term inpatient psychiatric unit.
  2. To develop clinical skills in interviewing, diagnosis, and formulation of treatment plans.
  3. To better understand biological and psychosocial aspects of severe mental illness.

Means of Implementation:

The student will be assigned to a twenty bed psychiatric unit at MCL-NO. Under the supervision of the staff, the student will assume responsibility for 3-4 selected patients. The student will function as a house officer, including H & PE's, psychiatric assessments, diagnostic formulations, medications and treatment plans, all with a careful bent toward the educational value of the cases. The student will participate in ward rounds which include formal and informal didactic presentation and interviewing patients under staff observation. The student will meet with staff individually one hour per week to discuss topics in Psychiatry. This may include assignment of articles or reports for discussion during this time.

The supervisor's assessment is based on the student’s demonstration of his or her range of clinical skills and knowledge.

Course name and number: Consult/Liaison Psychiatry (LSU-MCLNO & LIONS) PSYCH 448a.

Duration: 4 weeks, half-time

Number of Students: 1 (one)

Objectives:

  1. Introduce student to consult/liaison psychiatry in a general hospital setting.
  2. To develop clinical skills in evaluating patients with medical illnesses and secondary psychiatric disorders.
  3. To better understand the psychological aspects of medical illness.

Means of Implementation:

The student will be part of the consult/liaison team at University Hospital under the supervision of the residents and staff. The student will be responsible for initial evaluation and follow-up of consultations received from University Hospital. They will attend staff rounds three times a week with the staff and resident. In addition, they will attend the consult/liaison journal club once a week on Fridays.
