University Medical Center (formerly Lafayette
Charity Hospital) is a 190 bed hospital affiliated with the Louisiana State
University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Full time faculty of the School
of Medicine based in Lafayette, staff the hospital which provides training
opportunities in Family
Practice, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Surgery, and Pediatrics. Mixed medicine (Transitional without Pediatrics) and
Categorical Internships, and Residencies in Family Practice
and Internal Medicine, approved by the American Medical Association, are based
at the University Medical Center. In addition, Junior and Senior students from
the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans are assigned to University Medical
Center, attesting to the valuable training experience available at this
facility. The Hospital is operated by the State of Louisiana and serves the
medically indigent population from Acadiana, as well as providing a consultant
resource for the community. The present facility was opened in 1982.
An excellent medical library is provided for
the Faculty, House Staff and Students at all times. Immediate access to the
resource libraries of LSU and Tulane Medical Schools in New Orleans, as well as
the National Library of Medicine through the Medline Computer Access System, is
available.
