Objectives:

An introduction to the diagnosis and treatment of adult urologic diseases.

Means of Implementation:

The student will receive instruction in urologic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, assist in surgery, and will attend X-ray conferences, pathology conferences, and hospital rounds. He/she will participate actively in the Urology Clinic twice weekly. There will be no residents rotating on this service, so the students who apply for this course must be capable and willing to function in the capacity of an upper level resident under the supervision of the faculty. This will include first-assisting in surgeries via open, laparoscopic and robotic approaches.

Method of Evaluation:

The student will be expected to demonstrate the ability to apply basic knowledge in managing patients, give an oral presentation on a urologic subject and become particularly familiar with the GU physical exam.

Objectives:

Orientation in basic office and surgical urology.

Means of Implementation:

Student will assist in patient work-ups, will assist in surgery, will accompany residents on rounds, and attend urology conferences.

Method of Evaluation:

The student is evaluated through a compilation of information from the various staff and residents to whom he has been assigned from the standpoint of knowledge, participation and enthusiasm.

 

Course name and number: Urologic Oncology (LSU-MCLNO/East Jefferson General Hospital) UROL 425a.

Objectives:

This course is designed to give a senior student an intensive exposure to the diagnosis and management of malignancies of the adrenal, kidney, bladder and prostate.

Means of Implementation:

The student will actively participate in the management of patients with these malignancies.

Specifically, the student will be expected to assist in the operating room with major oncologic surgeries including laparoscopic and robotic cases. There will be no residents rotating with the student, so the students who apply for this course must be capable and willing to function in the capacity of an upper level resident under the supervision of Dr. Collins. This will include first-assisting in major urological surgeries via open, laparoscopic, and open approaches.

A significant amount of time will be dedicated to learning the basics of treatment planning for radiation therapy of prostate cancer via brachy therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, and intensity modulated radiation therapy.

The student will attend tumor board weekly as an introduction to the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of malignancies. If a student is involved in a case that is interesting to him or her and is appropriately prepared, he or she will be able to present to case to the surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists at tumor board and be involved in the decision making process.

Each student will be expected to submit an abstract suitable for presentation at a national meeting by the end of the rotation.

It should be stressed that this is an intensive course which is best for those students whose career plans involved the clinical treatment of cancer.

Students will be evaluated using the standard LSU School of Medicine Evaluation forms.

 

Course name and number: Pediatric Urology (LSU-MCLNO/Children’s Hospital) UROL 426a.

Objectives:

A four-week course offered at MCLNO and Children's Hospital, providing the student with an opportunity to evaluate pediatric urologic problems.

Means of Implementation:

The student will serve a preceptor ship in order to better understand all facets of pediatric urologic care including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, pre- and post-op care, as well as, office management of pediatric urologic diseases. The student will be expected to attend all associated lectures and conferences of the department during the preceptorship.

The student will be expected to demonstrate the ability to apply basic knowledge in managing patients.
