Rounds begin early, at approximately 5:00am. Most mornings after rounds, the students will report to the operating room. Monday morning pathology conference is an exception. After afternoon rounds with faculty, students are dismissed until the following morning rounds. There is no call associated with this rotation.
On Fridays from noon until 5pm, students are expected to participate in the departmental conference series, including Journal Club, Morbidity & Mortality, Pre-Op Conference, and Didactic Series.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Neurological Examination, as well as a familiarity with the indications, techniques, and potential complications of common neurosurgical disorders. Special emphasis will be given to the recognition of neurosurgical emergencies and urgencies, and the papropriate time course of diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical problems.

Transportation is required. The primary teaching site for LSU neurosurgery is at WJMC, with the chairman, the majority of the faculty and residents, and the subspecialty services. Accordingly, most students will be assigned to this site. However, subspecialty pediatrics is primarily supplied by Children’s Hospital and Ochsner, so students primarily focused on a pediatric career are encouraged to petition Dr. Richter for reassignment to these venues. Regardless of primary site, all required conferences are at WJMC.
