Pediatric Surgery

Staff: Dr. Evans Valerie, Dr. Charles Hill

Hospital: Children's Hospital

What is the work week like for students on this rotation?

The students come in at the same time as the residents (ask your residents for more details). Cases start at 7:30 and run until about 3:00pm, sometimes earlier. There is no call or weekend work for students.  There are clinics on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Conferences are mandatory on other afternoons.

What are the expectations of students?

Students are expected to scrub in on all cases.  They are assigned patients that they are to write notes on and become experts on their disease processes.  They should know some basic pediatric surgery.

How are students evaluated?

The students are evaluated by residents and Dr. Valerie with the forms provided by the Department of Surgical Education.  Knowledge of patients, teamwork, interest and efficiency are the main criteria for determination of evaluation grade.
