Urology (Ochsner)

What is the work week like for students on this rotation?

At the beginning of the rotation, students:

 

×          are assigned to one physician for the 3 weeks that they do rotation here in Urology.  The students are given a schedule of that physician's daily activity.  The Urology staff doctors rotate in surgery, clinic, endoscopy lab, cysto and satellite clinics on a day-by-day basis.

×          are given a handbook "Pocket Guide to Urology" which must be returned at the end of their rotation. 

×          are given a password and access to the computer to look up patient information and surgery schedules.

×          meet with the residents at the beginning of the rotation to go over what is expected of them as students.

 

Each morning for 6:30 a.m. the students make rounds with residents to see patients in the hospital, each student is given patient information and a description of their case the night before, so that the can be prepared any questions regarding that patient.

 

Students may be required to attend the Monday night conference for 5:30 p.m. and the Chairman's Conference on Mondays from 2-3:30pm on campus (see below for dates of conferences)

 

What are the expectations of students?

Students will be expected to elarn about urology; learn how to work as a team player with the physicians assistants, residents, nurses, medical assistants, and staff members; and ask questions, take good notes, and be prepared at all times

How are students evaluated?

Students are evaluated on judgment, appearance, initiative, preparedness, bed-side manners with the patients, accuracy, organization, courtesy, skills.

Other important information for students:

All students on the Urology rotation will be required to attend Urology departmental conferences on campus with Dr. Christian Winters.  Conferences will be from 2:00pm until 3:30pm on the third floor of the Lion's Clinic (room 307, 3B2) on the following dates:

July 23 

Aug 13 and Aug 27 

Sept 10 and Sept 24 

Oct 8 and Oct 22 

Nov 12 and Nov 26 

Dec 10
