While case presentations, small group sessions, and lectures all serve to provide students with a framework of the essentials of the pre- and post-operative workup of a surgical patient, these will not provide a comprehensive curriculum of surgical diseases. Students acquire the majority of their knowledge through self-directed reading. Students are expected to read systematically during their clerkships to cover the material contained in the required text. Students should also refer to the primary literature as interesting cases dictate. We recommend that review books, such as Surgical Recall and NMS Surgery, not be used as primary sources, but used to supplement the Student's reading.
Cope's Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen, 22nd Edition by Sillen, William MD.; Oxford Univ Press (2005). (This book is required reading while on the General Surgery rotation. This book will be made available for students to borrow during their clerkship and must be returned to the clerkship office by the end of the six weeks.)
