Welcome to the Department of PsychiatryPsychiatric care and education have been integral to the LSU School of Medicine since its founding in 1931. In 1955, the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology was formally established. Today, we are known as the Department of Psychiatry. When you join the Department of Psychiatry, whether as a student, faculty, staff or trainee, you become part of a team and part of a story dating back to the legendary Charity Hospital – where the lives of generations of New Orleanians began and ended and where thousands of medical professionals learned on the job. Charity Hospital was the brick-and-mortar embodiment of community service, education, integrity, and scholarship. To this day, those are the cornerstones of our department’s mission. Our goal is to define and provide the gold standard in mental healthcare, not just in New Orleans, but across the Gulf South and beyond. People of all ages and backgrounds connect with our department through a wide network of hospitals and subspeciality clinics. We collaborate closely with colleagues from a variety of medical and surgical disciplines, and these partnerships allow us to provide the comprehensive, compassionate care that has become synonymous with LSU Health. As a team, LSU Psychiatry serves as a beacon of hope for our region’s most vulnerable. We invite you to explore our programs and consider joining us. |
