Dr. Cynthia J. Brown will serve as Department Head for Internal Medicine

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Cynthia J. Brown has agreed to serve as the next Department Head for Internal Medicine. We expect her to begin in the spring. Dr. Brown is currently Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine (UAB). She also serves as Vice Chair for Faculty and Staff Development in the Department of Medicine, and faculty development is one of her passions. She is a dynamic leader who has grown the Division of Gerontology to include over thirty faculty members. She is also a distinguished researcher and scholar in the field of geriatrics. Dr. Brown is Director of the Integrative Center for Aging Research and she has a long history of research funding from NIH, HRSA, and the VA. She serves as the current Chair of the Health Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America, and she serves on the Editorial Board of the American Geriatrics Society.

Dr. Brown received her MD from University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. She completed her internal medicine residency at Yale University School of Medicine, where she served as Chief Resident. She also completed a three-year fellowship in Geriatrics and Clinical Epidemiology at Yale. After her fellowship, she joined the faculty at UAB as an Assistant Professor with a Career Development Award from the NIH. She became a tenured professor and Director of the Division of Gerontology in 2014. She follows Dr. Charles V. (‘Bo’) Sanders who will step down after holding the position of Department Head for more than 30 years. We will propose that Dr. Brown be named to hold the Charles V. Sanders Endowed Chair in Medicine. That will be a fitting tribute to both Dr. Sanders and Dr. Brown.

We are excited about the future of the Department of Medicine and about recruiting Dr. Brown. We welcome her to LSU and look forward to seeing her on campus in the coming months.
