Adult Psychiatry Residency Program

UMC-Night

Welcome to the General Psychiatry Residency Program!  The LSU-Ochsner Psychiatry Residency Training Program is dedicated to training our residents to become well-rounded psychiatrists who are capable of excelling in any setting after graduation. Our residents are exposed to a diverse patient population and a wide range of diagnoses in both public and private settings. We are trained to be practical, “hands-on” physicians with great empathy and commitment to their patients. Our faculty with their diverse backgrounds and interests adds to the educational breadth and allows our residents the opportunity to tailor their training according to their individual needs and interests. Here are some reasons why you should choose our program:

  1. We respect that you have a life, family, and friends outside of work. We work hard, but have time to enjoy ourselves and explore the city of New Orleans. Since each class is in charge of its own call schedule, residents do not have to miss out on the important events in their lives.
  2. Our residents are friends both inside and outside of work. We work as a team, and we truly enjoy spending time together.
  3. Our program is very receptive to feedback. Residents have ample opportunity to provide feedback anonymously, and so that changes can be made in real-time.
  4. Our faculty members are all approachable, supportive and devoted to excellence in teaching. Faculty members know residents by name, which lends to a close-knit community.
  5. We have no in-house call on nights and weekends! Intern call shifts end at 10:00PM.  Second year residents take home-call roughly every 10th night.  Third and fourth years have no call required weekend or night call at all!
  6. Second, third and fourth year residents have the opportunity to do internal voluntary compensated call (moonlighting), as long as the resident has passed step 3 and is in good standing. Many residents also pursue external moonlighting after they have met these requirements.
  7. We are exposed to forensic, geriatric, child and adolescent, psychosomatic, and addiction psychiatry, in addition to a number of other subspecialties throughout our training. Fourth year residents also have available to them many fascinating electives, including Neuroradiology, TMS training, ECT training, Palliative Care, and much more.
  8. We are able to train in one of the most unique, culturally diverse, and exciting cities in the world. There is always something going on in New Orleans, whether you’re a lover of food, art, music, the outdoors, or all of the above!

Choosing a residency program is a very important decision that will determine the quality education you will receive and the type of physician you will become. We are confident that the experiences inherent to LSU-Ochsner training will give you solid foundation for a successful career.
