ANNUAL (Vacation) LEAVE:

The vacation policy of the department is consistent with that of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. All residents receive 4 weeks annual leave and 2 weeks of sick leave per year.  Leave should be proportional to the rotation lengths in order not to burden any particular service. No greater than 1/3 of any rotation can be missed in order to be credited. Leave is approved on a first-come first-serve basis. Residents must assure coverage and submit a “Request for Leave Form” with all appropriate signatures. Residents covering in/outpatients for another resident on leave MUST sign the form for the specific time they are covering. Leave will not be approved during the time scheduled for PRITE. In the event that unusual circumstances affect the residency assignment, the Residency Training Director reserves the right to cancel any approved leave and direct that it be rescheduled.

EDUCATIONAL LEAVE:

Child Psychiatry Residents receive 5 days educational leave per academic year.

SICK LEAVE:

Amounts to 14 days per year. It is not accumulated. For unexpected sick leave, the resident must notify the Residency Coordinator (568-2537), the rotation supervisor, and the Chief Resident to assure coverage. Upon returning to work, the resident must fill out a leave slip designating he/she was on sick leave and submit it to the coordinator.

MATERNITY LEAVE:

House officer paid maternity leave utilizes available vacation leave plus sick leave for a total of up to six weeks. If the amount of maternity leave is in excess of accumulated sick leave time, annual leave and/or leave of absence without pay will be used.

PATERNITY LEAVE:

House officer paid maternity leave utilizes available vacation leave plus sick leave for a total of up to six weeks. If the amount of maternity leave is in excess of accumulated sick leave time, annual leave and/or leave of absence without pay will be used.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE:

Any leave beyond leave discussed in policies must be taken as leave of absence without pay. This must be arranged through the Residency Training Director, who, with the Chairman, will judge the appropriateness of the request.

MOONLIGHTING:

Structured moonlighting opportunities within LSU exist and are covered by the LSU malpractice plan. PGY II and III residents may moonlight if they are American graduates entered the program as PGY I's, and passed STEP III. Transferring PGY II's with STEP III can moonlight.
