Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry: Facilities and Education

ApplicationTop

Tracing its roots to the historic Charity Hospital, the University Medical Center (UMC) provides an ideal location for training in C-L Psychiatry. UMC is a 450 bed, level one trauma center that serves the region and is renowned for its excellence in treating the traumatically injured. The psychiatry consultation service works closely with the trauma surgery, burn center, critical care services and the trauma recovery clinic to provide care for a multitude of extraordinary patients. Internal medicine and neurology services also frequently utilize the consultation service and collaborate in the treatment of very complex cases.

Ochsner Medical Center has a 450 bed hospital and is a nationally recognized multi-specialty healthcare delivery system.  It is a transplant center for heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas.  The resident gains experience in running a private practice model of consultation psychiatry.

The Trauma Recovery Clinic at UMC provides the fellows with a venue for the “Introduction to Collaborative Care and Research Methods” course in which the fellows provide follow up care and engage in research one afternoon weekly.

In addition to direct patient care and teaching rounds, the fellow attends courses in:

  • Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry: This course lays the ground work with core topics in the practice of C-L Psychiatry.

  • Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry: Special Weapons And Tactics:  This lecture series explores the cutting edge in knowledge for the practicing C-L Psychiatry specialist and includes formal instruction in special topics such as psychopharmacology in the patient with limited access and organ function, forensics, pediatric C-L, etc.

  • Consultation-Liaison Journal Club: This course enables the fellows to participate in thoughtful discussion with general psychiatry residents and faculty from our affiliated institution, Ochsner Medical Center, appraising journal articles exploring topics in consultation psychiatry.

  • Inter- Fellowship Journal Club: Likewise, this course offers fellows the opportunity to engage in academic discussion with fellows from other programs, such as Addiction, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensics, as well as assessing articles relevant across the subspecialties.
