Tracks
Hospitalist Track
A Hospitalist Specialty Focus is available for residents interested in preparing for a career in Hospital Medicine after residency. This track includes two additional months of clinical experiences centered on inpatient care, including supplemental rotations on the medical wards and opportunities to further develop procedural proficiency. Residents also complete a professional development month with focused exposure to radiology and its subspecialties, including interventional radiology, to enhance diagnostic and procedural skills. In addition, a hospitalist conference is held bimonthly, where each resident in the track presents a core topic for discussion during the year. Upon graduation, participants receive a certificate of completion recognizing their involvement in this specialized track.
Primary Care Track
The Primary Care Track is available for residents interested in pursuing outpatient medicine after completing residency training. Residents in this track complete an additional month of ambulatory care during their PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, designed with their input to focus on areas of primary care and subspecialty clinics that enhance career development in outpatient medicine—including dermatology, women’s health, and others. An optional elective through the VA offers the opportunity to perform home visits in the community.
A dedicated professional development month allows residents to tailor a specialty focus that strengthens skills essential for outpatient practice and addresses specific training needs in chronic disease management, preventive care, and patient counseling. Outpatient-based subspecialty rotations in gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, cardiology, and infectious diseases are also available, ensuring residents gain experience in managing conditions within the outpatient setting.
Additionally, a monthly conference focused on primary care education is held, featuring resident-led presentations on topics central to outpatient medicine.
HIV Track
This Infectious Diseases Track is available for residents interested in pursuing a career in Infectious Diseases—with a particular emphasis on HIV and AIDS care—or for those seeking advanced training to strengthen their skills in primary care. Residents receive comprehensive training in both outpatient and inpatient management of patients with HIV and AIDS, providing meaningful exposure to this specialized population throughout their residency. In addition, structured didactics and educational opportunities are incorporated to deepen clinical knowledge and enhance proficiency in caring for these patients.
