What is gynecologic oncology?

Gynecologic oncology is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology. It requires 3-4 years of additional training after completing an ob/gyn residency during which time a physician gains expertise in the cancer surgeries and treatments including systemic therapies.

Who should be referred to a gynecologic oncologist?

Anyone with a gynecologic cancer or suspected to have a gynecologic cancer (cancer of the womb, vagina, vulva, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or cervix) should be referred to a gynecologic oncologist. Patients with these conditions cared for by a gynecologic oncologist have better chances at acheiving cure and remission as well as better treatment outcomes. In addition gynecologic oncologists often care for women at risk for cancers because of precancerous conditions or familial syndromes. We also assist with complex gynecologic care and surgical planning.
