True to how LSU Orthopaedics operates, on April 24th and 25th the department held another stimulating and congenial Journal Club/Grand Rounds, with this month’s event focused on Hand and Upper Extremity.

The April 24th Journal Club and dinner at Katie’s restaurant, sponsored by our industry partners Skeletal Dynamics, featured guest speakers Dr. Deana Mercer (University of New Mexico) and Dr. Louis Catalano (Steadman-Hawkins Clinic and University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center). These notable surgeons facilitated discussions on some of the latest research in hand surgery, including classification of open distal radius fractures, plate fixation vs metacarpal intramedullary nailing, simple vs comminuted radial head fractures treated with ORIF, and radial head arthroplasty for fractures.

Participating in the following day’s Grand Rounds were a number of LSU faculty, including Drs. Rick Ahmad and Harvey Chim, Brandon Donnelly as well as former residents, Drs. Corinne Cloud, Barton Wax, and Blaine Session. Participants were treated to a combination of lectures and labs related to common hand fractures, wrist fractures, and complex elbow injuries.

“We are thrilled that these outstanding clinicians shared such insightful and practical information on a range of topics, including metacarpal nailing, olecranon osteotomy, IJS elbow instability and more,” says Robert Zura, M.D., Chair of LSU Orthopaedics. “Thank you to the dedicated team that pulled together this terrific event.”
