School of Graduate Studies Holds Graduate Research Day

Angela Amedee, PhD
Associate Dean, School of Graduate Studies

The School of Graduate Studies held their annual Graduate Research Day on November 8, 2019 in the Human Development Center. LSUHSC graduate students and post-doctoral fellows presented 72 abstracts. They shared their scientific work through poster presentations in the morning, as well as through 10-minute talks or three-minute thesis talks (3MT®) in an afternoon session. Members of the graduate faculty and post-doctoral fellows served as judges for the poster session and 10-minute talks. Faculty were highly impressed with the work being done by LSUHSC trainees, as well as their proficiency in presenting and discussing their data to an audience with a wide-range of expertise.

The top three poster presentations were awarded to the following graduate students: Krystal Belmonte (Physiology), Jarrod Harman (Physiology), and Phaethon Philbrook (Genetics).

The best 10-minute talk was delivered by Katelyn Robillard (Neuroscience Program) and the top postdoctoral presentation was given by Crescent Combe (Neuroscience Center).

Students in the 3MT® competition were challenged to effectively explain their research in three minutes to the audience using only one slide. The concept of the 3MT competition began at the University of Queensland in 2008 and has now been adopted by more than 300 universities in 19 countries, including LSUHSC (http://threeminutethesis.org/international). This professional development exercise celebrates graduate research, and 14 graduate students entered the competition at LSUHSC. Guest judges for this contest included Kathryn Kerdolff, MLIS, (Associate Professor/Librarian), Patrick Reed, RTTP (Director, Office of Technology Management), Jeff Schumacher, DVM (Clinical Veterinarian/Surgeon, Animal Care Division) and Lee McDaniel, PhD (Assistant Professor, Biostatistics, School of Public Health).

Graduate Students award ed for the Top 3MT® were:

Celeste Faia (MIP Department), Nazary Nebeluk (MIP Department) and Kristina Larter (Genetics Department).

Graduate Research Day was a huge success thanks to the hard work and planning by members of the Graduate Research Committee. The committee is comprised of GS faculty members Joy Sturtevant (Committee Chair), Shyamal Desai, Diptasri Mandal, Ham Farris, Arnold Zea, John Cork, and Ed Trapido, as well as student members, Diana Battaglia and Meredith Juncker.

At the event, Dr. Joseph Moerschbaecher also awarded the Jack Hines Memorial Award for outstanding service to the School of Graduate Studies to Dr. Joy Sturtevant.

A big round of congratulations to all those presenting at this event, as well as the planners, judges and attendees. Our dedicated and engaged graduate school community are what made this event so successful!
