The foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) - Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation, has named Aneesha Ananthula, MD, a Hematology-Oncology Fellow at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, one of 164 recipients of the Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation, 2021 ASCO Annual Meeting Merit Awards.

A limited number of Merit Awards are given to fellows/oncology trainees whose research is addressed in high-quality abstracts submitted to an ASCO Meeting and recognized for its scientific merit. These distinguished awards support oncology trainees who are first authors on abstracts selected for presentation at the ASCO Annual Meeting. These oncology professionals are recognized for their respective field and research advancements within the cancer care community.

The 2021 ASCO Annual Meeting will be an online-only experience, June 4-8, 2021.

Dr. Ananthula will present her research findings on the association and prevalence of venous thromboembolism in cancer patients with COVID. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition where a blood clot forms in a vein. There are two forms -- deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Complications of VTE include long-term damage to the valves in the vein, as well as death.
