Bio
Dr. Alison A. Smith, MD, PhD, FACS, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Louisiana State University Health
Sciences Center. She also serves as Associate Program Director of the LSUHSC Surgical
Critical Care Fellowship Program and the Trauma Medical Director for the Norman E.
McSwain-Spirit of Charity Level I Trauma Center at UMC New Orleans. She earned dual
Bachelor of Science degrees in Biological Sciences and Chemistry from Virginia Tech
and completed her MD and PhD in Biomedical Sciences through Tulane University’s Physician/Scientist
Program. Dr. Smith completed her general surgery residency at Tulane and a fellowship
in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Texas Health San Antonio.
Dr. Smith is a dedicated educator and prolific researcher. Her work spans trauma systems,
hemorrhage control, surgical education, and innovative therapies for complex wounds,
supported by multiple grants and over 100 peer-reviewed publications.
