Bio

Harvey Chim, MD is Professor and Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. He graduated from the National University of Singapore School of Medicine and obtained an Intercollegiate MRCS Diploma with Membership through the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He subsequently completed plastic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, followed by a hand and microsurgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During residency he was the recipient of the Clifford Snyder award from the Plastic Surgery Research Council.

In 2018, Dr Chim was awarded the Richard H Gelberman Scholar award by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). He was selected as an ASSH Plastic Surgery Visiting Professor in 2019. He was the sole faculty recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award by the University of Florida in 2020 for clinical excellence and compassion in delivery of care and respect for patients, families and colleagues. In 2024 Dr Chim served as a Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) International Visiting Professor and was also selected by the ASSH as the Bunnell Fellow.

Dr Chim specializes in hand, peripheral nerve and reconstructive microsurgery. He has a special interest in brachial plexus reconstruction, neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, amputee reconstruction, ultrasound for flap planning and complex microsurgical reconstruction of the extremities.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS), American Society for Peripheral Nerve (ASPN) and Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS). He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hand Surgery (American Volume), HAND and Journal of Hand Surgery (Asian Pacific Volume). He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles.
