Bio
A native of New Orleans, Dr. Winters earned his medical degree at the Louisiana State
University Medical Center. He completed his urology residency in the combined LSU
/ Ochsner program, and a fellowship in female urology and voiding dysfunction at the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1995. He returned to LSU in 1998, and subsequently
joined the staff at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation. He assumed the Chair position at
LSU New Orleans in 2006, serving both institutions. He was appointed Program Director
of the Ochsner / LSU Urology Residency Program in 2005, and was recognized by the
AUA as Teacher of the Year in 2009 for these efforts.
He remains the H. Eustis Reily Professor of Urology and Gynecology and Chairman of
the Department of Urology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
in New Orleans, Louisiana. He also serves as the Vice-Chancellor of Clinical Affairs
and Chief Executive Officer of the LSU Healthcare Network. He is Board Certified in
Urology, and was appointed as a Trustee to the American Board of Urology (ABU) in
2011, serving as President in 2016.
Dr. Winters has served as President of the Society of Urodynamics and Female Pelvic
Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU), the Louisiana State Urologic Society,
and as a Councilor of the Society of University Urologists. He was director of the
SUFU Fellowship Committee, and served as a member of the joint ABU / AUA Examination
Committee. He also serves as a member of the American Urologic Association Stress
Urinary Incontinence Guidelines Panel, the AUA-ABOG Stress Urinary Incontinence Outcomes
Measures Panel and Chair of the AUA Urodynamics Guidelines. He served on the Quality
Improvement and Patient Safety Committee as well as the Practice Management Committee
of the AUA. Through these roles, he has frequently consulted in the area of voiding
dysfunction and female urology.
He is currently a member of: SUFU, the American Urologic Association, the Southeastern
Section of the AUA, the International Continence Society, the American Urogynecologic Society, the American College of Surgeons, the International Urogynecologic Association and
the Louisiana State Urologic Society. He was inducted into the American Association
of Genitourinary Surgeons in 2012 and the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons
in 2017.
Dr. Winters served as Associate Editor of Neurourology and Urodynamics and is on the
editorial board of the Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society. He has published
over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and text chapters. Dr Winters’ bibliography includes
publications on graft biomechanics and histology and is recognized as a leader in
graft technology on vaginal surgery. This work has facilitated his advisory roles
with the AUA in these areas, and he has represented the AUA before the FDA advisory
panel.
Dr. Winters has been recognized by “Best Doctors” since 2010, and as the National
Association For Continence “Continence Care Champion” in 2016. He was presented the
Cristina Manthos Award for mentorship of women in urology by the Society of Women
in Urology in 2015. In 2020, he was recognized as Alumnus of the year by the Ochsner
Alumni Society and for Distinguished Contributions by the AUA for leadership and teaching
in the areas of voiding dysfunction and female urology.
