Education at the LSU School of Medicine

Medical education at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans encompasses three distinct but interrelated entities.

Undergraduate medical education focuses on the four years that lead to the MD degree. Lectures, laboratory exercises and experience in hospital and clinic settings are supplemented with training in a state-of-the-art Student Learning Center. Graduate medical education deals with the training physicians receive after graduation. This is the training that imparts specialized knowledge and skills leading to specialty certification in a medical or surgical specialty. This training may last five or more years after graduation.

This training takes place in the inpatient and outpatient facilities of the public hospital system as well as at private hospitals and physician offices.

Continuing medical education provides the practicing physician with up-to-date information through short courses given throughout the year. It allows the physician to keep current in a particular area. LSU’s large and varied CME program features review-type courses, practical hands-on experience and simulation.
