Grading Policy

To obtain a passing grade for the third year obstetrics and gynecology rotation the student will be required to obtain a grade of at least 56 on the National Board shelf examination.  He or she must also have at least a passing grade for their evaluations from attending staff and residents who have significant contact with them during their rotation.  At the end of each rotation, the residents will meet and decide on a numerical grade for each student based upon their performance during rounds and on call.  Each student’s faculty advisor and ward attending staff will likewise assign a numerical grade for their students.  This grade will be based upon their performance during rounds and their performance during their small group discussions.  These two will make up 2/3’s of the faculty grade.  The final third will come from an evaluation of a 15 – 20 minute presentation of a topic approved by their faculty advisor.  These discussions will be given to their small group and the faculty advisor will assign a score to the presentation.  The resident and faculty assigned numerical grades will then be averaged to determine the overall ward grade.  For all these evaluations the following grading scale should be kept in mind: Below 69 = Fail; 70 – 83 = Pass; 84 – 91 = High Pass; 92 – 100 = Honors.

If a student passes both the National Board shelf examination and their ward grade, the following method will be used to determine if a grade of pass, high pass or honors will be given for the final grade.  The National Board shelf examination subject test score will be converted to numerical grade based on a 100 point grading scale.  For example a grade of 90 and above on the National Boards (a perfect score) would be converted to 100, a grade of 56 (the minimum passing grade) would be converted to a 70.  This converted score will account for 50% of the overall grade.  The other 50% will be taken from the ward grade.

Final Grading Scale:

70 – 83 = Pass
84– 91 = High Pass
92- 100= Honors
