New Orleans Orientation

The Junior block is assigned for approximately 6 weeks and is to be divided into two sections of 3 weeks each:

Obstetrics and Obstetrical Clinics – Students must sign in at the desk for clinic attendance.

  • Delivery Unit Assignment – will be at the LSUHSC Interim Hospital Labor and Delivery Unit (3rd Floor) for a period of approximately 3 weeks.  Students will be divided into several groups and will be on 24 hours shifts on the delivery unit starting at 6:30 AM and ending at 6:30 AM the following day. At 6:30 the shift changeover is done and the outgoing group is to briefly review the patients on the unit with the incoming group. The students coming off duty at 6:30 AM are to help make daily rounds on the Postpartum Ward at 6:30 AM with the residents and interns. They should also attend ward rounds with staff at 8:00 AM Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. The Junior Program runs concurrently with the Senior Elective program. Because of this setup the 3rd year students act as observers and assistants to senior students, interns and residents until competency and capability of the junior students has been checked. Lectures, conferences, seminars, and other departmental functions as well as outpatient clinics are attended on the days when you are not on call.

Gynecology Wards, Gynecological Surgery and Gynecological Clinics – Students must sign in at the desk for clinic attendance.

  • Gynecology Responsibilities – rounds on assigned patients are to be made every day prior to resident rounds and then problems and postoperative care, etc., can be presented and formulated at Resident Work Rounds, Green sheet Hx. And P.E. are MANADATORY as is the preoperative check list.  These are to be filled by junior students and reviewed by staff assigned to ward. Hx. And P.E. are to be obtained individually however, pelvic exams will be performed in conjunction with resident and/or staff supervision.

Students assigned on GYN who are on call on Labor and Delivery may be asked to perform primary patient case duties on GYN when the GYN residents need their help.

The student is expected to follow his patients pre-operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively.

In GYN clinic the student is to introduce himself to a particular resident and observe or aid in clinical appraisal of patients.

*Lectures will be given throughout the block. Attendance is mandatory for all students in the New Orleans area. Read the relevant chapter in the textbook before the lecture. Seminars are given on pertinent topics by both the OB and GYN services each week.

While on rotation with this department you must adhere to the following:
