Gastroenterology Fellowship


The primary goal of this program is to provide training and experience at a level sufficient for each fellow to become competent in general gastroenterology by the end of their 2nd year of training. This goal is to be achieved through clinical experience by bedside or patient-oriented teaching in the appropriate hospital or ambulatory setting; technical skills for which the fellow must demonstrate an understanding of the indications, contraindications, complications, interpretation, cost-effectiveness and technique; and formal instruction through conferences, seminars and other didactics.

Our secondary goal is to provide subspecialty training in one or more areas of gastroenterology based upon an individual fellow’s interests. This goal is achieved through dedicated training which is tailored for the fellow and may involve attendance at specialty conferences and experiences. Subspecialty training in these areas is offered during the 3rd year of fellowship as opposed to an additional 4th year required by other programs.

From where does your program draw fellows for training?

Our program recruits fellows from a national pool of trainees across a large number of residencies. However, approximately 50% of our trainees graduated from a residency program and/or medical school located in Louisiana.


What defines your program?

This program is defined by our dedication to fellowship education. Our section resources are focused on the goal of providing exceptional training which shows in our graduates.


How do you promote diversity and inclusion within your fellowship?

Our program has cultivated a diverse faculty group from different backgrounds and with varying experiences. This group intentionally recruits fellows from across the U.S. who can new perspectives and knowledge to our program during training. All faculty and fellows within our program value a culture of mutual respect and appreciation which fosters growth within individuals as well as our program as a whole.
