A MESSAGE FROM OUR
Louisiana State University New Orleans Ophthalmology residency program is a multi-site, three-year ACGME accredited ophthalmology residency. During the three years of training, residents gain experience in a wide variety of clinical and surgical situations with diverse patient populations often with severe pathology. This allows mastery of examination, diagnostic and surgical techniques. We also provide a joint internship year in New Orleans prior to the ophthalmology residency.
LSU provides the opportunity to care for thousands of patients in an autonomous/supported environment, exposing residents to the spectrum of ophthalmic disease severity in all subspecialties, the latest in medical and surgical ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical procedures and treatment, in a variety of clinical practice settings with insured and uninsured patients. Consequently, the extensive clinical exposure allows our graduating ophthalmology residents to be well prepared to practice comprehensive ophthalmology as well as competitive to pursue the subspecialty fellowship of their choice.
We have a dynamic didactic schedule, including weekly grand rounds followed by Basic and Clinical Science Course (BCSC) question sessions, subspecialty lectures and quarterly visiting speaker lectures. Residents are also required to participate in either basic and/or clinical research activities, supervised by a faculty mentor. This enables our residents to feel comfortable practicing as skilled comprehensive ophthalmologists or pursue further fellowship training after graduation from residency.
Our priorities are to provide an excellent education to create well-rounded and ethical ophthalmologists with solid clinical and surgical skills so they can become future leaders and role models in their field. Excellence in education, the wellbeing of residents while providing the highest quality of ophthalmology care to our patients.
