A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF RESIDENTS

Welcome to the Louisiana State University Ophthalmology Residency Program! We are absolutely thrilled that you are considering our program as you embark on the next phase of your training.

At LSU, you will have the incredible opportunity to encounter a wide range of pathology. Our clinical sites encompass urban academic centers such as UMCNO and Ochsner Medical Center, as well as regional satellite clinics in Houma, Bogalusa, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge. With a carefully balanced approach of guidance and gradual independence, our aim is to refine your diagnostic and decision-making skills, empowering you to thrive in any clinical or surgical scenario.

Our commitment to surgical excellence is exemplified by our innovative wet lab curriculum. From the early stages of your internship, you will receive comprehensive training in oculoplastic and corneoscleral suturing. As you progress to your PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, our labs will focus on strabismus and cataract surgery, emphasizing a high-volume repetition of sequential steps. Moreover, our state-of-the-art simulation platforms are available around the clock, providing you with invaluable opportunities for practice and refinement.

One of the greatest strengths of our program lies in our exceptional full-time faculty, dispersed across each site. As you delve into the intricacies of ophthalmology, you will be exposed to diverse management philosophies and surgical techniques, laying a solid foundation for your own unique approach. Our attending staff members are dedicated educators, taking immense pride in their role as mentors throughout your residency journey and beyond.

Last but certainly not least, we are incredibly fortunate to call New Orleans our home. This one-of-a-kind city offers a vibrant blend of world-class restaurants, lively festivals, and the rich culture of Southern Louisiana. Whether you're enjoying the festivities of Mardi Gras or partaking in our annual residency crawfish boil, our program places great value on fostering camaraderie and creating an environment where cherished memories complement your professional growth.

We sincerely appreciate your consideration of our program and are truly excited to share with you why LSU is an extraordinary place for ophthalmology training. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to any of us. We're here to help!
