The aim and objective of research and scholarly activities in the Section of PM&R is to acquire knowledge and understanding of the role of clinical research in evidence based clinical care. This is accomplished through didactic lectures, monthly journal club, and by carrying out research projects. All investigative research is supervised by a faculty mentor. To provide a broad based learning experience resident physicians are encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary collaborative research projects.
All residents are expected to actively participate in research and scholarly activities including detailed literature review, case studies, developing research hypothesis, study design and writing the study protocol. Presentation of their projects at regional or national research meetings and publication of findings in peer reviewed journals are strongly encouraged.
Didactic research education is provided through journal club and during the regular didactic lecture series on Friday afternoon.
The Resident Research Committee, chaired by the Director of Research, provides a platform for open discussion among faculty mentors and resident physician, is to explore resources needed to support their projects, identify difficulties and solve problems, and to provide feed back and recommendations on the status of individual projects. PGY-I residents are urged to start in their first year by getting familiar with the routine and selecting a topic, identify a faculty mentor and submitting proposal for approval. Research proposals are approved by the Director of Research and Residency Program Director. Maximum of two residents are allowed on one project.
The Section of PM&R celebrates Residents Research Day annually and provides an opportunity for oral presentation of resident projects. Best presenters are encouraged to participate and present in regional or national meetings.
