Internal Medicine

The following residents were nominated for UMC Resident of the Year:
•    Dr. Elyse Cleveland, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
•    Dr. Laura Hutchins, 2nd year Medicine-Pediatrics 
•    Dr. Mary Catherine Keith, Emergency Medicine

Dr. Spencer Hart, a 3rd year resident in the Internal Medicine residency program, was selected as UMC Resident of the Year. 

Dr. Gisela Marrero-Rivera received the Outstanding Fellowship Teaching Award, given annually by residents in recognition of outstanding teaching and mentoring.

Dr. Maria-Paula Reyes Ramirez, Internal Medicine, was recognized as a nominee for UMC Intern of the Year. 

Dr. Morrisa Taylor, a first-year resident, was selected as UMC Intern of the Year.

Dr. Brandy Mize, 2nd Year Pulmonary/Critical Care fellow was awarded the UMC Fellow of the Year Award. Dr. Kantrow is her program director.

The Section of Emergency Medicine recognized additional residents at graduation:

  • Dr. Alyssa Espinera received the Williams J Bradley Award.
  • Dr. Mary Kat Keith received the Albert J. Lauro Award.
  • Dr. Katherine Braxton and Dr. Mark Saigh received the Sonostar Award.
  • Dr. Katherine Braxton, Dr. John Lona, Dr. Michaela Banks, and Dr. Nicole Kaban received LSU EM Clerkship Awards. 
  • Dr. Jordan Vaughn received the Social EM Champion Award.
  • Dr. Mary Kat Keith received Resident of the Year.
  • Dr. Joe Gannett received the Outstanding Junior Resident Award.

Drs. Brian Allen, Michael Bank, Brian Barbara, Mathoula Bilalis, Lauren Bonneval, Jocelyn Carnicle, Dedric Clarke, Ian Denys, William Gibson, Pooja Goel, Hunter Hall, Christen Harris, Andre Ito, Taras Nebulek, Peter Oakes, and Eduardo Venegas have been named “Difference Makers” by their UMC patients. 

Matthew Cutrer, MD, JD (PM&R Resident) was selected as President of the LSU School of Medicine-New Orleans House Staff Association for AY 2021-2022.

 

Ophthalmology

Nicole Legare, MD, Chief Resident, was the winner of the Ophthalmology Annual Residents' Day Research Award for her project Musculoskeletal Pain Among Residents and Practicing Ophthalmologists with our Chair Jayne S. Weiss, MD and Zhide Fang, PhD, Professor and Director SOPH and SOM.

 

Otolaryngology

Our recent Neurotology fellowship graduate, Dr. Isaac Erbele, was just promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Army.


Pathology

Graduating pathology residents, Dr. Bing Han, Dr. Katherine Wang, and Dr. Gloria Sura, have successfully passed their AP/CP boards. 

  • Dr. Bing Han will complete a Breast Pathology fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa and a Dermatopathology fellowship at Tulane Hospital, New Orleans.
  • Dr. Katherine Wang will complete Cytopathology and Surgical/GI fellowships at the University of South Carolina, Charleston.
  • Dr. Gloria Sura will complete Cytopathology and Molecular Genetic Pathology fellowships at Methodist Hospital, Houston.

Dr. Gloria Sura was selected as University Medical Center's Resident of the Quarter for her commitment to University Medical Center's core values, as well as continuously demonstrating compassion, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Dr. Nibras Fakhri received the Jerome Smith Award for best infectious disease pathology poster at the USCAP 110th annual meeting.

Dr. Nibras Fakhri and Dr. Fernanda Da Silva Lameira had submissions accepted for the LSUHSC 2021 Quality Improvement Forum. Dr. Fakhri's submission, “Optimizing cytology cell block cellularity to improve diagnosis and patient care,” was selected as an E-poster. Dr. Lameira's submission, “Coding and Billing for Pathologists,” was selected as an abstract.

Dr. Fernanda Da Silva Lameira's poster, titled “A rare case of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis: An autopsy report,” won the clinical vignette section at the LSU Medical Research Day.

Dr. Bing Han, Dr. Christopher Girardo, Dr. Nibras Fakhri, Dr. Zaid Khreefa, Dr. Maryam Sadough, and Dr. Wenjing Qiu all had submissions accepted for CAP 21.


Pediatrics

Med/Peds PGY-2 resident Laura Hutchins was nominated for initiation into LSUHSC's Gold Humanism Honor Society. GHHS physicians are considered exemplars of empathy, compassion, altruism, and integrity; their dedication to service in working with patients and others in the field of medicine inspired their students to nominate them for this honor. They will be inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society LSUHSC New Orleans Chapter. 

Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellow Dr. Callie Roth's journal article review was recently published to the national Society of Hospitalist Medicine website: https://www.sohmlibrary.org/journal-club.aspx.

Casie James, MD, was awarded the Penny Scurto, MD Outstanding Pediatric Resident Award. Dr. James also received the Outstanding Teaching Resident Award, given annually by third-year medical students for excellence in teaching during their pediatrics clerkship.

Brad Hyman, DO, was awarded the Outstanding Medicine/Pediatric Resident Award.

Natalie Derouen, MD, was awarded the Gretchen Life, MD Award, given to a resident who embodies Gretchen's zeal for life and love for patients.

Casie James, MD and Nikita Lalchandani, MD received the Alfonso Vargas, MD Research Award, given to residents who have demonstrated outstanding performance in pediatric research.

Jinnesse Taylor, MD received the Intern of the Year Award, given annually by Pediatrics PG1, 2, and 3 acknowledging an intern who exemplifies the values of pediatric residency: dedication to care of patients, advocacy for their patients, professionalism, interdisciplinary collaboration, and collegiality among residents.

Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellow Dr. Callie Roth reviewed an article in the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics' (COMSEP) June Journal Club. You can read the review here.
