Vascular surgery fellows in the ACGME-accredited Independent Fellowship must complete a minimum of 250 major vascular reconstructive procedures during their training. These operative experiences must encompass a broad range of case types to ensure comprehensive technical competence. Fellows are required to demonstrate proficiency across several core operative categories, including abdominal, cerebrovascular, peripheral, complex, endovascular diagnostic, endovascular therapeutic, and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) procedures. In addition to operative skills, fellows must develop expertise in vascular imaging and diagnostics, including the ability to interpret angiography, CT, MRI, and MRA studies, as well as non-invasive vascular laboratory testing such as duplex ultrasound. This combination of operative and diagnostic training ensures that fellows are fully prepared for independent practice in the management of the full spectrum of vascular disease.

Our program trains compassionate, clinically excellent vascular surgeons who are fully prepared for practice in both academic and community settings. Vascular fellows at LSU Health Sciences Center–New Orleans gain experience serving diverse and underserved populations, developing the skills to help reduce healthcare disparities. With high clinical volume, diverse training environments, and outstanding faculty, the program fosters leadership, innovation, and excellence in vascular care. Graduates are highly competitive and sought after nationwide.

During the two-year vascular surgery fellowship, fellows complete six-month clinical rotations at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

Outside Rotations: N/A

During the fellowship, vascular surgery fellows often work alongside integrated vascular surgery residents or general surgery chief residents on shared services. While they may collaborate closely, fellows and residents maintain separate primary patient responsibilities. Fellows also play an important teaching and supervisory role, guiding residents and students in both the technical and clinical aspects of vascular care.
