Graduate Programs in Human Genetics

Heena Mehta with her poster that was awarded second place at the 21st annual LSUHSC Graduate Research Day. Her prize was peer recognition and $150. Her poster was chosen from 32 entries. The event is designed to offer students the opportunity to practice presenting their research to peers in an academic setting similar to national and regional conferences.

The Department of Genetics is one of six Basic Science departments at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC). The Genetics Department and the Gene Therapy Program share the sixth floor of the Clinical Sciences Research Building.

The seven-story (200,000 square-foot) building is a state-of-the-art research facility that was dedicated in October 2000 and named in October 2001 in honor of the late Dr. Mervin L. Trail, our former Chancellor.

The Department of Genetics offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree program in Human Genetics. On average, there are 12-16 graduate students in the Department of Genetics and approximately 3,000 graduate, professional, and postdoctoral students in the Health Sciences Center.

Wayne V. Vedeckis, PhD, is the Interim Head of the Department of Genetics, which was established in 2000 and continues to grow and develop through the recruitment of new faculty.

The Gene Therapy Program was established in 1997 and faculty members have conjoint appointments in the Department of Genetics.

Top-notch scientists conducting cutting-edge research leading to new technologies and treatments is the vision of the Department of Genetics, the Gene Therapy Program, and the LSU Health Sciences Center.
