Research

Research in the Section of Community and Population Health adheres to the principles of Community Partnered Participatory Research (CPPR)1. CPPR emphasizes equity, transparency, and community representation co-leadership in all phases of research. Our partnered research to date has sought to develop interventions that improve health outcomes and resilience while addressing adverse risk factors in under-resourced communities and among populations facing physical or behavioral health and healthcare inequities.

ADDITIONAL RESEARCH

  • Veteran-Informed Safety Intervention and Outreach Network (VISION)
  • Preventing Firearm Suicides among Rural Veterans by Engaging Military Caregivers
  • Identifying and Disseminating Strategies for Improving Access to Health Care Among Unstably Housed Veterans in Rural Areas

CPPRN

The Community and Partnered Participatory Research (CPPRN) is a network driven by equal partnerships between patients, community members, and researchers to develop a behavioral health data registry for conducting research based on the priorities of communities, patients, and caregivers. Funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

Goal of CPPRN:

The goal of CPPRN is to address persistent racial/ethnic disparities (primarily involving African Americans and Latinos) among adults and adolescents at risk for behavioral health conditions. CPPRN aims to accomplish this goal by:

  • Developing policies with stakeholders via the CPPR approach and community relationships developed through longstanding community relationships.
  • Create a reproducible approach to participatory research infrastructure development involving patients, caregivers, clinicians, and community stakeholders.
  • Develop research and data infrastructure using a partnered working group process with collaborative decision making.

CPPRN Principles:

  • Trust
  • Respect
  • Transparency
  • Strength-based
  • Power and knowledge sharing
  • Co-leadership by community members, patients, and researchers
  • Building skills and knowledge among all participants
  • Co-ownership of all products including data

RADD

Resilience Against Depression Disparities (RADD) is a community-patient partnered intervention tailored to meet the mental health needs of LGBTQ persons. The overall goal of this research study is to determine whether a community-health worker-led, 7-session class to teach adults skills to improve mood can improve depression outcomes over and above evidence-based depression care agency trainings for LGBTQ+ adults. Funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.

C-LEARN

Community Resilience Learning Collaborative and Research Network (C-LEARN) is a community-academic partnership focused on learning how to enhance resilience in communities affected by disasters and climate change. We are engaging urban and rural communities in South Louisiana to test approaches to improve community and individual resilience. We will test both training and coalition approaches to promote community resilience, while also assessing the added value of mobile technology-based resources and tools for individuals. Funded by the National Academies of Sciences and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Gulf Research Project.
