After completing his medical education, including his internship and a diploma in public health, Dr. Lopez joined the faculty of the University of Salamanca School of Medicine in Sprain and was Assistant Professor of Physiology and Medicine there from 1956-1958. He then moved to Columbia, South America as the Rockefeller Foundation Fellow instructor “ad honorem” in biochemistry at the University of Valle in Cali. During that time he also spent a year as a member of a nutritional survey team.

From 1960 to 1961, Dr. Lopez was the Rockefeller Foundation Fellow in the Dept. of Medicine Graduate School at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana; and in 1963, he received his PhD in Biochemistry from that institution. After working several years at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, he became Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Lopez joined the faculty of LSU School of Medicine in 1967 and became Director of the Lipid Clinic at Charity Hospital. From 1970 to 1972, he served as a member of the Louisiana Statewide Nutrition Task Force, and in 1974 he became Chief of the Section of Nutrition in the Department of Medicine at LSU. In 1983 he also accepted the position of Chairman of the Charity Hospital Nutrition Committee.

Dr. Lopez retired from active patient care in 2007, but he continues to be actively involved in nutritional education.
