LSU Medical Student Clinical Rotation

The Department of Otolaryngology offers a 4th year ENT Clinical Clerkship Elective (OTOR 420) and Secondary Acting Internship (OTOR 418) for interested Medical Students.

Rotation Objectives

  • Reinforce a comprehensive history and physical examination of the head and neck
  • Begin to interpret laboratory and radiographic data with relation to underlying disease processes.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, being able to interpret data and efficiently present that information on rounds or to other providers.
  • Spend dedicated time with our tertiary care specialists in the clinic and operating room, and understand indications for subspecialty referral.
  • Improve upon basic surgical technique, including knowledge of instrumentation, soft tissue handling, and suturing techniques.
  • Understand important perioperative considerations, including preoperative evaluation, multidisciplinary consultation, and postoperative care.

Celeste Gary, MD

Director

Dr. Celeste Gary is a native of New Iberia, Louisiana. She graduated from LSU magna cum laude in Biological Sciences. She then attended the LSU School of Medicine. She completed her Otolaryngology residency training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans as well. She then completed a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. This is a top-tier fellowship that gives its fellows tremendous experience in both adult and pediatric otolaryngology.

Dr. Gary is a board certified member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

Clinical Activities and Responsibilities:

Weekly responsibilities are often divided by the Chief Resident on the Head and Neck Service, but will include:
  • Morning rounds with the Head and Neck team – clinical care, patient evaluations, and patient presentations.
  • Operating room – individual time with our different tertiary care specialists.
  • OLOL Clinic – Patient evaluation and workup in our Centers of Excellence.
  • LSU Health Clinic – Active patient care, comprehensive evaluation and management, with resident and faculty supervision.
  • Inpatient and ED Consultations – Evaluate patients and develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
 

Didactics:

  • Resident Lectures occur every Wednesday at 4 pm.
  • Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Tumor Conference occurs every Wednesday at 5 pm.
  • Journal Club once per month, with expectation for the acting intern to critically assess and present at least one article.
  • Department Didactic Day occurs the first Tuesday of every month.

  • Operating room – individual time with residents and faculty in each specialty.
  • UMC and Children’s ENT Clinic – Patient evaluation and workup.
  • Inpatient and ED Consultations – Evaluate patients and develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans with the residents.
  • Monthly Head and Neck Tumor Board at University Medical Center
 

Didactics:

  • Resident Lectures occur every Wednesday at 4 pm.
  • Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Tumor Conference occurs every Wednesday at 5 pm.
  • Department Didactic Day occurs the first Tuesday of every month.
  • Independent journal article evaluation and presentation to other students and Dr Pelaez
  • Possibility for faculty run suturing lab each month

Clinical Activities and Responsibilities:

Weekly responsibilities are often divided by the Chief Resident, but will include: 
  • Morning rounds with the team – clinical care, patient evaluations, and patient presentations.
  • Operating room – individual time with residents and faculty.
  • UHC ENT Clinic – Patient evaluation and workup.
  • Inpatient and ED Consultations – Evaluate patients and develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
  • Chief rounds every Wednesday morning.
 

Didactics:

  • Resident Lectures occur every Wednesday at 4 pm. 
  • Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Tumor Conference occurs every Wednesday at 5 pm.
  • Journal Club once per month, with expectation for the acting intern to critically assess and present at least one article.
  • Department Didactic Day occurs the first Tuesday of every month.
  • Grand Rounds with residents usually the 4th Wednesday of every month at noon.  (Audiology, Allergy, Botox/Filler, and Pathology)
