LSU Health New Orleans - School of Medicine held a virtual Learning Center tour for Mount Carmel Academy STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) Day in January. More than 70 juniors from Mount Carmel Academy participated in the virtual event.

The students participated in a virtual patient scenario using a high-fidelity patient simulator in the Learning Center's simulation labs. The students were told that they were healthcare professionals in an emergency room and needed to care for an ill patient. The students were given a brief history, patient symptoms, review and assessment of patient vital signs. They were also able to request tests (CxR, EKG) to determine the best possible diagnosis for the simulated patient. The program was developed and run by Dr. Daryl Lofaso, Director of Simulation Operations at LSUHSC.

This virtual experience offered the students a glimpse into medical management of patients via telemedicine. It also offered them a glimpse into how future healthcare providers are being taught and the technology being used to train them. The teacher stated the students offered positive reviews about this experience.
