Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice Announces Building Health Teams Summer Program

LSUHSC’s Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (CIPECP) is offering a four-week virtual summer program called Building Health Teams. This program is open to high school upperclassmen and any college students interested in learning more about or pursuing a health career.

Healthcare is typically provided through a siloed approach. However, a team approach or an interprofessional collaborative approach to patient care and community health improves outcomes. This summer program will allow pre-health students to learn about collaborative practice and identify and learn about the role, training, and expertise of various health professions through a combination of lectures, self-learning, and small group discussion.

Students will work in small teams to get a better idea of what health career they would like to pursue and/or what roles other health professionals will play on their future health teams. They will present their learning in a culminating presentation. Speakers from the LSU Health Sciences faculty will join the sessions to give insight into careers ranging from nursing to dental hygiene to physical therapy to laboratory sciences to medicine to public health, and anywhere in between.

Under the direction of Dr. Tina Gunaldo (CIPECP Director) and Mrs. Colette Baudoin (CIPECP Faculty Council School of Nursing), Jared Robinson and Hanna Almoaswes, rising 4th year medical students are co-leading the summer program. CIPECP Director Dr. Tina Gunaldo said, “Summer is a great time to shift the focus from traditional school studies to other knowledge and skills that will help students be successful in the future. The program is held virtually, so participants can join from anywhere.”

“Participants will earn valuable experience that will translate into great talking points for applications, essays, personal statements, cover letters, and interviews,” she added.

Participants will earn an electronic badge upon completion. This badge may be included on resumes or applications to denote achievement of learning about health care and interprofessional teaming.
