Mentorship & Mentoring for Faculty

Mentorship is a cornerstone in one's growth and professional development throughout a career in academic medicine.  Over the course of the faculty life cycle, faculty will serve as both mentors and mentees. The goal of the mentoring program and mentorship support at LSU School of Medicine aim to increase accessibility to mentors outside of your primary department, develop mentoring skills among the faculty and promote the advancement of faculty. We invite you to learn more about the programs and support that is offered within the SOM.

Faculty interested in finding a mentor can apply on-line by completing either the clinical or basic science application and submitting a copy of their current CV.

Upon receiving the application and CV, the program requests input from the Mentorship Committee to determine up to three potential faculty mentors. Potential mentors are contacted by the program to determine their availability to provide consistent mentoring. The program selects mentors based on the mentees needs and goals that align with mentors’ areas of expertise.

Once mentors have been selected, mentees are introduced to their mentors via email, and mentees contact the mentors to set-up an initial meeting. The program recommends a minimum of quarterly meetings for one year, but the meeting frequency is individualized to meet the needs and scheduling considerations of the mentees and mentors. At the end of the year, the program requests feedback to determine the effectiveness of mentoring in meeting the needs of the mentee.

If you are interested in participating in the mentoring program or would like more information, contact Dr. Michelle Moore (mbacon@lsuhsc.edu) or Dr. Amy Creel (acree1@lsuhsc.edu), Assistant Deans for Faculty Affairs.

The committee will support faculty as mentors and mentees in fostering a culture of mentorship that ensures academic success and advancement by working closely with the Office of Faculty Affairs to organize and coordinate development opportunities.

All faculty currently on the tenure track are required to have a mentoring committee of three to five faculty at or above the rank of the individual. The mentors can be LSU faculty or outside of the institution. The Department Chairs and Center Leaders will assist faculty in selecting the mentoring committee members. The role of the tenure track mentoring committee is to support and guide the faculty towards earning tenure.
