Year at a Glance

 

The rotation schedule is tailored to each fellow's individual learning needs and career goals. Elective options include both clinical rotations and experiences in academic and administrative areas. 

Year 1

 

Pediatric Hospital Medicine Rotation

Clinical Information

• Manning Family Children's Hospital has 3 PHM teams (Purple, Green and Gold).
• PHM teams each consist of 1 fellow, 2 upper level, residents, 2-3 interns, and 3-4 students.
• The PHM teams care for most inpatients outside of the ICU.  This includes:
  • General pediatric patients
  • Patients with complex medical needs (including tracheostomies and home ventilators)
  • Patients requiring surgical co-management or surgical subspecialty care
  • Patients who require certain subspecialty care (for example, Pulmonology, Neurology, and Rheumatology patients are all housed on the PHM team)
• All pediatric subspecialties are represented and available for consultation at Manning Family Children's in New Orleans.

Schedule Information

• One PHM month consists of 2 weeks of service (one 7-day week, one 5-day week) and 6-8 admit shifts (a mix of days and nights).
• Admit shifts
  • During day time call, faculty/fellows are in house to see new admissions from the ER and other hospitals, as well as consults from other services.
    • Overnight, senior residents are called by the ER first and will call faculty/fellows if help is needed. Night call is taken from home (7p-7a). Faculty or fellows will sometimes report to hospital for procedures (such as lumbar puncture) or triaging help for the residents.
    • Faculty/fellows are called first for direct admits or transfers from other hospitals.

Electives

• Elective experiences are personalized according to the fellow's individual educational and career goals.

• The Introduction to Academic Medicine rotation is offered early in the first year. It consists of four weeks of introductory experiences with leadership, administration, medical education and teaching, quality improvement/patient safety, and research. We aim to help fellows gain important exposure early on so they can start refining their own short- and long-term goals.

Year 2

Community Hospital Experience

• The community hospital experience takes place at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital, located in Baton Rouge (~1 hour away). 
• The community hospital rotation is four weeks long, broken up into 1-2 week experiences at a time. Local housing is available if needed. 
• Fellows work with residents and board-certified pediatric hospitalist faculty on a busy inpatient service. 

NICU and Newborn Nursery

• NICU and newborn nursery experiences are completed just down the street at Touro Infirmary. Fellows are supervised by LSU Neonatology and General Pediatrics faculty. 

Electives

Electives are tailored to each fellow's individual career and learning goals. Many senior fellows opt to complete additional PHM rotations, and there are plenty of other available options!
