Faculty Assembly 2020 Awards

The Faculty Assembly, in conjunction with the Dean, congratulates the 2020 Faculty Assembly Award recipients and fellow nominees. The awards recognize the contributions of faculty to the school's mission in four areas: outstanding service to the institution, outstanding service to the community, outstanding young faculty member, and outstanding mentor.

“School of Medicine faculty, the Faculty Assembly, and the administration are incredibly proud of the nominees and recipients. These faculty members are being recognized by their peers for their dedication and hard work,” said Sanjay Kamboj, MD, president of the Faculty Assembly.

Faculty are nominated by SOM faculty for awards. Award recipients receive a plaque and an educational grant sponsored by the Dean.

The 2020 Outstanding Service to the Institution award recognizes individuals who have made major, enduring contributions to the development of the SOM and who have advanced its mission. The award honors a faculty member who has demonstrated service to other members of the faculty for the common good of the institution.

Congratulations to Efrain Reisin, MD, Department of Medicine-Nephrology and Hypertension.

The Faculty Assembly also congratulates eligible nominees Julio Figueroa, MD, Department of Medicine-Infectious Disease; Maria Reinoso, MD, Department of Ophthalmology; and Joy Sturtevant, PhD, Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Parasitology.

The 2020 Outstanding Service to the Community award acknowledges selfless acts by an individual faculty member for the benefit of others served by either the SOM community and/or humanity in general. One of the primary missions of the SOM is to serve as a model of excellence in public and private medical care and in community-oriented programs. Because faculty are often the face of the SOM in these various venues for health care, this award seeks to recognize a faculty member who has enhanced the school's reputation within the community through acts of generosity with their time and talent. These acts can include their participation in community service activities within or outside of their profession, or any other activities that promote the school's mission within the community.

Congratulations to Ryan Pasternak, MD, Department of Pediatrics.

The Faculty Assembly also congratulates eligible nominees Allison Augustus-Wallace, PhD, Department of Medicine/Office of Diversity & Community Engagement; Scott Edwards, PhD, Department of Physiology; and Stephen Kantrow, MD, Department of Medicine-Pulmonary/Critical Care & Allergy/Immunology.

The 2020 Outstanding Young Faculty Member award acknowledges the vitally important contributions of Instructors and Assistant Professors within the first three years of their appointment. This award seeks to provide early recognition of significant contributions by an individual young faculty member.

Congratulations to Karli Boggs, MD, Department of OB/GYN.

The Faculty Assembly also congratulates eligible nominees Terrel Master, PhD, Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy and Randy Sorge, MD, Department of Medicine-Emergency Medicine.

The 2020 Outstanding Mentor award honors individual faculty members who have helped build a supportive academic environment, providing a vital resource for student and faculty growth and success, and enhancing excellence in the SOM. What frequently determines whether or not someone will have a successful career in the basic sciences or medicine is the extent to which they were mentored, yet the special talents or skills of a mentor are rarely rewarded even though they are essential for the progression and development of young students and faculty.

Congratulations to Andrew King, MD, Department of Orthopaedics.

The Faculty Assembly also congratulates eligible nominees Nicholas Gilpin, PhD, Department of Physiology; Asha Heard, MD, Department of OB/GYN; Ian Hodgdon, MD, Department of Surgery; Yaguang Xi, MD, PhD, Department of Genetics; and Luke Wall, MD, Department of Pediatrics.
