Faculty Assembly Report

Sanjay Kamboj, M.D.
Faculty Assembly President 2019-2020

The April Faculty Assembly meeting was held virtually. Annual Faculty Assembly Awards are typically announced at the General Faculty meeting, but because the General Faculty meeting is postponed, the awards were announced at the assembly. The Faculty Assembly, in conjunction with the Dean, congratulated the 2020 Faculty Assembly Award recipients and fellow nominees. The awards recognize the contributions of faculty to the school's mission. Congratulations to Efrain Reisin, MD; Ryan Pasternak, MD; Karli Boggs, MD; and Andrew King, MD (see full story under SOM Achievements-Awards and Honors).

The assembly was updated on the impact of COVID-19 on the campus, including:

  • The 2020 commencement ceremony has been canceled in keeping with CDC guidelines about gatherings and social distancing. Students will receive their degrees and awards electronically in May;

  • There has been a tremendous increase in the number of ICU beds needed in the LSU SOM partner hospitals, which in turn caused elective surgeries to be postponed. Doctors and some residents impacted by this have been redeployed to assist internal medicine and emergency rooms.

  • The Dean addressed the stress that COVID-19 is causing, including social isolation for some and the working of long hours for others. He reminded the assembly about the Campus Assistance Program (CAP) and recommended that employees reach out to them for anxiety, stress and general well-being during this time (https://www.lsuhsc.edu/orgs/campushealth/cap.aspx)

  • Construction on campus continues to proceed at this time.
