Cynthia J. Brown, MD to Serve as Next Head of Department of Internal Medicine

Dean Steve Nelson, MD recently announced that Dr. Cynthia J. Brown has agreed to serve as the next Department Head for Internal Medicine. Dr. Brown is currently Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine (UAB). Faculty development is one of her passions and she also serves as Vice Chair for Faculty and Staff Development in the Department of Medicine. She is a dynamic leader who has grown the Division of Gerontology to include over 30 faculty members.  She is also a distinguished researcher and scholar in the field of geriatrics. Dr. Brown is Director of the Integrative Center for Aging Research and has a long history of research funding from NIH, HRSA, and the VA. She serves as the current Chair of the Health Sciences Section of the Gerontological Society of America, and she serves on the Editorial Board of the American Geriatrics Society.

Dr. Brown follows Dr. Charles V. ‘Bo' Sanders, who will step down after holding the position of Department Head for more than 30 years. We anticipate that Dr. Brown will be named to the Charles V. Sanders Endowed Chair in Medicine, which will be a fitting tribute to both Dr. Sanders and Dr. Brown.

Dr. Brown received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. She completed her internal medicine residency at Yale University School of Medicine, where she served as Chief Resident. She also completed a three-year fellowship in Geriatrics and Clinical Epidemiology at Yale. After her fellowship, she joined the faculty at UAB as an Assistant Professor with a Career Development Award from the NIH. She became a tenured professor and Director of the Division of Gerontology in 2014.

Dr. Nelson notes that he and other leaders of the School are excited about the future of the Department of Medicine and about the recruitment of Dr. Brown.

“We welcome her to LSU Health Sciences Center and look forward to seeing her on campus in the coming months,” he said.

Dr. Brown is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2021.
