Multidisciplinary Effort Published in American Journal of the Medical Sciences

Several SOM clinical faculty were published in the November issue of the American Journal of the Medical Sciences, which was entirely devoted to Women's Health.

Breast and gynecological cancers affect almost 900,000 women and therefore most health care providers will be involved at some point in the management of women with cancer. As the prognosis of all cancers is much more favorable when diagnosed in early stages, it is imperative that all health care providers are familiar not only with current screening guidelines for the average population, but also with the identification of high-risk individuals who may benefit from more intense screening as well as available interventions to prevent disease or decrease risk.

The purpose of their review article is to provide relevant information to physicians and other health care providers to aid in identifying patients who are classified as “high risk” for developing breast or a gynecologic cancer, outlining what interventions exist for adequate screening and risk reduction strategies, and to provide an update on current screening guidelines for individuals at average and high risk.

Their study, An Update on Screening and Prevention for Breast and Gynecological Cancers in Average and High-Risk Individuals, can be found here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjms.2020.06.008

“What I find most interesting about this article is that it represents a multidisciplinary effort with authors from the LSU Health Departments of Medicine, Ob-Gyn and Radiology,” said Dr. Agustin Garcia, one of the authors and Professor of Medicine, Section Chief of Hematology/Oncology and the Charles W. McMillin and Richard Paul Grace Chair in Cancer Research.
