Bio

Ernest James III, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. A native of Kenner, LA, Dr. James received his B.S. in Biology from Xavier University, New Orleans in 1993. Prior to entering medical school in 1996, he received training in the US Army and was employed as a medical laboratory technician at SmithKline Beecham. He graduated from Boston University in 2001 and completed his residency training at the LSU Family Medicine Residency Program in Kenner in 2004.

During his three-year service obligation with the National Health Service Corps following residency, Dr. James worked at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Metairie and a homeless clinic in Baton Rouge, LA. During this time, he served in the capacity of Medical Director and CEO. He also has participated in the Louisiana Health Information Exchange Project, the goal of which was to design, develop, and implement the necessary technology infrastructure to demonstrate functional interoperability in collaboration with Louisiana healthcare providers through the standardized exchange of patient information.

He joined the LSUHSC faculty in November 2007. Dr. James is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and an officer in US Army Reserve. He has a special interest in the care of the underserved.
