Welcome to the LSU Pediatrics Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program!
Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Our website is designed to provide an overview of our fellowship program, the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, and the exceptional clinical environment at Manning Family Children’s Hospital.
Our newly accredited three-year fellowship offers a comprehensive balance of clinical training, research, and professional development. The 36-month curriculum is structured to provide progressive responsibility and autonomy, integrating robust clinical experience with dedicated scholarly time.
Clinical training takes place at Manning Family Children’s Hospital, a quaternary referral center and the first and only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in Louisiana and the Gulf South. Each year there are more than 275,000 clinic visits, over 64,000 emergency department visits, and more than 13,000 surgical procedures. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is an 18-bed, high-acuity unit with more than 1,300 admissions annually. It is equipped to provide advanced life-sustaining therapies, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Fellows gain extensive experience managing patients with multisystem organ failure, septic shock, and acute neurologic injury. Fellows will also have the opportunity to manage complex congenital and acquired cardiac disease in our new 28 bed CICU. This breadth of exposure ensures that fellows develop proficiency in advanced critical care technologies, and team-based management of the most complex pediatric patients.
In addition to clinical training, fellows are expected to engage in meaningful scholarly activity. The LSU Health Sciences Center offers robust opportunities for clinical, translational, and educational research, with mentorship available across disciplines. Fellows also participate in a structured quality improvement curriculum and complete a longitudinal QI project during the course of their fellowship, preparing them to lead initiatives that enhance patient safety and outcomes.
Our faculty are deeply committed to mentorship and education. Through bedside teaching, formal didactics, simulation training, and individualized career development, we support fellows in becoming confident clinicians, educators, and leaders. Graduates of our program will be well prepared not only to deliver exceptional care, but also to advance the field of pediatric critical care through innovation, scholarship, and leadership.
We are proud of the clinical excellence, academic rigor, and collaborative spirit that define our program. We invite you to explore our fellowship further and consider joining us in our mission to improve the lives of critically ill and injured children across Louisiana and the Gulf South.
