Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship

Didactics and Conferences

LSU Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

The LSU Pediatric Critical Care program offers a robust curriculum. Fellows will learn from critical care attendings who have trained at programs across the country, offering a diverse spectrum of clinical expertise. Faculty from a wide range of subspecialty services will further enrich fellows’ education. The curriculum consists of didactic and hands-on sessions, as well as multiple sessions of fellows as teachers, with close faculty mentorship. As fellows progress in their training, they will take an active role in teaching junior fellows and residents, as well as in curriculum development.

Curriculum Components

Didactic sessions will be taught by critical care medicine and subspecialty faculty and will cover core critical care topics, such as respiratory physiology, ventilator management, cardiopulmonary interactions, ARDS, sepsis, airway management, vasoactives, sedation and analgesia, neurocritical care, renal replacement therapy, nutrition, end-of-life care, difficult conversations, health equity, and ethics.

Grand Rounds are led by local and visiting faculty on a wide variety of topics. Fellows will be encouraged to lead one Grand Rounds during their training, with close faculty mentorship.

Sessions will be taught by critical care faculty and staff members, including ECMO specialists and respiratory therapists. Topics include ventilator management, noninvasive respiratory support, ECMO, ultrasound, procedures, and procedural sedation. As training progresses, senior fellows will lead some sessions for junior fellows.

Fellows will participate in sessions with residents and nurses. As training progresses, fellows will learn to lead sessions and facilitate debriefings. Fellows with an interest in simulation education can also lead monthly hospital-wide mock codes and/or be trained as PALS instructors.
