Didactics and Conferences
LSU Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine
The LSU Pediatric Critical Care program offers a robust curriculum. Fellows will learn from critical care attendings who have trained at programs across the country, offering a diverse spectrum of clinical expertise. Faculty from a wide range of subspecialty services will further enrich fellows’ education. The curriculum consists of didactic and hands-on sessions, as well as multiple sessions of fellows as teachers, with close faculty mentorship. As fellows progress in their training, they will take an active role in teaching junior fellows and residents, as well as in curriculum development.
Curriculum Components
Didactic sessions will be taught by critical care medicine and subspecialty faculty and will cover core critical care topics, such as respiratory physiology, ventilator management, cardiopulmonary interactions, ARDS, sepsis, airway management, vasoactives, sedation and analgesia, neurocritical care, renal replacement therapy, nutrition, end-of-life care, difficult conversations, health equity, and ethics.
Once per year, each fellow will work with one faculty mentor to present Journal Club on a recent and relevant journal article and facilitate discussion with the CCM group. Faculty will present remaining sessions, and fellows will participate in discussion.
Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Morbidity & Mortality
Once per year, each fellow will work with one faculty mentor to present on a case chosen by the department and facilitate discussion with CCM faculty and nursing staff. Faculty will present remaining sessions, and fellows will participate in discussion.
CCM/PHM & CCM/EM Combined Case Conference
Once per year, each fellow will work with one fellow from either hospital medicine or emergency medicine to present on a case chosen by the departments and will facilitate discussion with CCM, PHM, and EM faculty and nursing staff.
Fellows will also benefit from a robust cardiology fellowship program and will attend cardiology educational sessions when rotating in the cardiac ICU. Fellows with a particular interest in cardiac ICU will be welcome to attend extra cardiology education sessions.
