VA Medical Center Update-Hospital to Open in August

Dr. Randy Roig, Associate Chief of Staff for Education and the Designated Education Officer

The VA Medical Center is planning their hospital grand opening in August!  The medical center clinics have been open for several months to serve veterans, but with the opening of the hospital the South Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) is gearing up for the return of full medical services to veteran patients throughout 23 parishes in southeast Louisiana.   Dr. Randy Roig, FAAPMR, Associate Chief of Staff for Education and Designated Education Officer at the VA, remarked, “It’s an exciting time to become fully operational again in New Orleans. We’re preparing for the opening and a new group of eager medical students at our new facility.”  He continued, “All 2nd, 3rd and 4th year LSU medical students are credentialed to join us at the VA as soon as we open.”

The LSU School of Medicine and SLVHCS have enjoyed a long partnership as a clinical teaching site for both students and residents. The new facility and expanded services allow LSU even more opportunity to partner with the VA to provide valuable training experiences.  Roig said, “We already have LSU residents from numerous specialties in our clinics with many more prepared to join us at the VA as soon as we open the hospital.”

Dr. Randy Roig, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine/PM&R  has been appointed to the VA as the new Associate Chief of Staff for Education and the Designated Education Officer.  Dr. Roig’s appointment began March 1, 2017. He can be contacted at rroig@lsuhsc.edu.
