Dr. Jayne S. Weiss Named to FDA Ophthalmic Devices Panel

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has appointed Jayne S. Weiss, MD, Professor
and Chair of Ophthalmology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, as a Voting
Member of the Ophthalmic Devices Panel in the Center for Devices and Radiological
Health. She will serve a three-year term.
According to the FDA, the Ophthalmic Devices Panel reviews and evaluates data concerning the safety and effectiveness of marketed and investigational devices for use in the eye and makes appropriate recommendations to the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. The nine voting members are selected by the Commissioner or designee from knowledgeable authorities nationally. The Center for Devices and Radiological Health has established advisory committees to provide independent, professional expertise and technical assistance on the development, safety and effectiveness, and regulation of medical devices and electronic products that produce radiation. Each committee consists of experts with recognized expertise and judgment in a specific field. Members have the training and experience necessary to evaluate information objectively and interpret its significance.
Weiss has served the FDA Ophthalmic Devices Committee since 2000 as a member, Chair, and consultant.
Weiss, who holds the Herbert E Kaufman MD Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology, also serves as Professor of Pathology and Pharmacology, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, and Chief Medical Officer of the LSU Healthcare Network.
She has been a member of numerous national committees, including the Basic and Clinical Sciences Course on Cornea and External Eye Diseases, National Institutes of Health Visual Sciences Study Section, National Advisory Eye Council, Eye Bank Association Research Committee, Preferred Practice Plan for Cornea and External Eye Diseases, the Eye Bank Committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Board of Directors of the Cornea Society and the Medical Advisory Board of the Eye Bank Association of America.
Weiss is the recipient of the 2020-2021 Castroviejo Award from the Cornea Society. She has received the Service Advisory Award from the FDA, two Secretariat Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Senior Honor Award from the AAO, two Knight for Sight Awards from the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation, Year of Woman Award from Women in Ophthalmology, LSU Ophthalmology Residency Teaching Award and Research Award and is included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Best Doctors in New Orleans and Louisiana.
She has authored more than 100 articles and chapters and 1 book. She presently is Chair of the International Committee for Classification of the Corneal Dystrophies, member of the editorial boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea and the International Journal of Eye Banking, and Associate Secretary of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Research and Regulatory Committee.
