Mentoring IMAGE 1Our annual “Sci-Fly” Speed Mentoring Event returned as an in-person event on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, after being held virtually for the last two years due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. Speed mentoring is a professional development activity conducted by the facilitation of timed-conversations between mentors and mentees, to discuss the expectations of biomedical, medical, and public health academics, careers, and work-life balance. Overall, this occasion provided our visiting summer research students, who attend our area high schools and partnered undergraduate institutions, as well as scholars of our NSF-REU and NIH-ENDURE, and NIH-PREP programs, opportunities to receive advisement from up to six mentors by rotation over the timespan of an hour. This year's activity, which included 31 mentees and 34 mentors, was held on the 3rd floor of the Medical Education Building in the team-based-learning classroom.

The School of Medicine's Dean's Office, the School of Medicine, Office of Diversity & Community Engagement (ODCE), the School of Graduate Studies Recruitment Committee, and the Association of Women in Science-SL Chapter (AWIS-SL), located on the LSUHSC-New Orleans campus, sponsored this engagement event. We offer a “Heartfelt THANK YOU” to our 2022 Speed Mentoring Mentors and a "Special THANK YOU!!!" to our colleagues-sponsors:

1.    Dr. Richard DiCarlo, Interim Dean, School of Medicine
2.    Dr. Angela Amedee, Interim Dean, School of Graduate Studies
3.    Dr. Robert T. Maupin, Jr, Associate Dean of the SOM, Office of Diversity and Community Engagement
4.    Dr. Lisa Harrison-Bernard, President, AWIS-SL

Finally, to Ms. Melissa Prestwood (Coordinator, Dept. of Physiology) and Brittany T. Moore, MPH (Summer Internship Program - Assistant Coordinator), Dr. Fern Tsien's Lab Department of Genetics), "THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!" for the behind the scenes support of this event.
