Student Achievements

Image of Leon SandersLeon Sanders III, Class of 2023, has been awarded the 2022 Dr. Breen Student Scholarship from the Southern Medical Association. The scholarship is awarded based on multiple criteria, including need, community service, and leadership. Sanders accepted his award during the Southern Medical Association 2022 Annual Scientific Assembly hosted at the Black Fox Lodge in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee earlier this year.

In his acceptance speech, he said, "It is with great honor and thanks that I accept the Southern Medical Association's Dr. Breen Student Scholarship. As a father of two girls who live across the country in Minnesota, this award will go a long way to defraying the costs of Christmas gifts and my travel to be reunited with my children. I have been blessed to be able to participate in and oversee a number of community service projects in the city of New Orleans and in the future I plan to continue these efforts. It is my sincere goal to increase the number of matriculating and graduating African-American males in medical school programs so that my city's patients are met by physicians who look like them, understand them on a cultural level, and are trained to provide the best care medically possible. I thank you all for seeing and approving of my vision and I look forward to continuing to make you proud as I begin my residency training in Internal Medicine and create and sustain programs that are designed to bring my dreams from the depths of the ether out into reality."
