New LSBME Permit Renewal Process

LSU GME,  in collaboration with the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME), has improved the renewal training permits process.  This change was made to encourage house officers to renew licenses earlier to alleviate renewals during the busy initial licensing periods of May-June.  The initial roll-out of the new process  resulted in 103 house officers renewing through the June 30, 2018 period. The new process was introduced Coordinator Workshops and the instructions can be found in the new GME Knowledge Base under Licenses.

If you have any questions, please contact Ashley Walker at acomea@lsuhsc.edu or 568-2468.

LSBME Licensing Process

Old Process – Programs generate Program Director Letters and send them to the LSBME.  Residents/Fellows were responsible for getting payments to LSBME.

New Process – The GME Office worked with the LSBME to come up with a process that will work for everyone. The new process is:

  • Coordinators will complete a spreadsheet listing all House Officers who will be renewing a training permit for the next academic year.
  • The House Officer will submit a check or money order written payable to LSBME for $100.00 to the program coordinator.
  • Each check should be attached to the House Officer’s  Program Director Letter. The Program Director letters can be dated as early as January 1, 2017.
  • Once the coordinator has received all documentation and payments for all renewing house officers, everything should be submitted to Ashley Walker in the GME Office.

Spreadsheet and PD Letters – The new LSBME Permit Renewal Spreadsheet and updated Program Director Letter are available online using the GME Online Appointment Forms system.

Due Dates – The deadline to turn the spreadsheet and PD Letters into the GME office is January 15, 2017.  You will be able to start printing the spreadsheet and program director letters on January 3, 2017.  You may want to start trying to collect payments in advance.

Step 3 Exam – All house officers that are renewing their training permit for the third year must have taken and passed step 3.  The NBME updates show that a House Officer needs to have taken the exam by December 31, 2016 to have results by May 10, 2017.  See Notice from the NBME regarding Step 3.

Instructions outlining the new process, along with instructions for downloading the spreadsheet and PD Letters are available at LSBME Permit Renewal in the Knowledge Base.
